Sarah Goldman Professor Wagner HFIT March 28, 2007 Spike in Birth Control Prices The article I read talked about the sudden and sharp increase of birth control prices, particularly in college health centers and community clinics. These health facilities used to offer birth control to students and community members for as little as $5-15 dollars a month. However suddenly, these costumers are seeing the price sky- rocketed to as much as $50. But why? A federal law that was passed last year penalized drug companies who sell contraceptive (the pill, patch or ring) at a discounted rate to colleges and clinics. So even if they wanted to, these companies are required by law to supply these venues with the normal drug cost. This is leaving many women in a tight spot. They must either find a way to come up with the extra cash to continue their use or birth control, or they force them to make the difficult decision of stopping this all together.
