Sarah Goldman Prof. Wagner HFIT- April 6, 2008 News on Skin Cancer In the April issue of Glamour, there was a re-issued article about checking your body for skin cancer. They reported that after printing a similar article last summer, twenty three readers wrote in to say that the article prompted them to seek medical attention for moles and spots that turned out to be cancerous. The article featured this April provided readers with an updated two minute test for skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Frighteningly, the most serious case- melanoma- has risen in women by 2% over the past 20 years. The rate of skin cancer in woman under forty has tripled for basal cell and quadrupled for squamous cell carcinoma. Tanning (outdoors and in) is thought to be to blame. Glamour reported that indoor tanning during your twenties increases one’s risk for melanoma by 75 percent. A monthly self examination is the best way to check for abnormalities on your
