Dr. Khondaker Juvenile Justice System Journal 8 1. Probation is the suspension of a jail sentence. A juvenile who has been convicted of a crime does not serve jail time. The court orders probation and the juvenile returns to the community for a certain time and they have to abide by certain conditions that are mandated by the court. They also are placed under the supervision of a probation officer. The main goal of probation is more than just giving the juveniles a second chance. It offers services to the juvenile delinquents so that they can stay out of trouble with the law and become better citizens. 2. There are three reasons why probation considered as a desirable alternative to institutionalization. The first is that the juvenile still has their liberty but the community also is protected through the rules given to the juvenile so as to not continue the criminal acts. Second is the promotion of rehabilitation for the offender. They get to live a relatively normal life by staying in contact with the community. The last reason is that it costs less than sending the juvenile to jail. There is also no negative impact on the juvenile due to being confined. 3.
