Give three examples and describe how they fulfill the definition of hormone (tell where they are produced and where they act). A hormone is a chemical signaling molecule produced in one part of the plant and acting in another. Ex. Auxin produced in SAM acting root formation, Cytokinin produced in roots and stimulates lateral shoot development. Ethylene produced throughout plant acts in mature leaves causes abscission. Others okay too… 2. Of the hormones we discussed in class, two are described as being “antagonistic” to one another. Which are these hormones, and how are they antagonistic? Giberellins and ABA GA acts to promote germination and promote stem growth. ABA acts to impose dormancy and inhibit stem growth. They are “antagonistic” b/c they have opposite effects on a plant. 3. What happens to plant tissue when it is exposed to high levels of auxin? What about high levels of cytokinin? If auxin and cytokinin ratios are relatively equal? High auxin: get root development
