Though marketed as a biopic (that is, a biographical film) and indeed bringing certain aspects of Lincoln’s personal life to the screen, the film is primarily a political procedural, detailing the lengths gone to pass the amendment and end the Civil War. The film had been in development for 10 years and was noted at the time of release for the large amounts of research and dedication to historical accuracy put into it. With that in mind, the primary goal of the film is to paint a more historically accurate picture of the 16 th President. Day-Lewis plays Lincoln as a good natured country man with a higher voice than the modern public assumes. He has a family with whom he shares both tender moments and heated arguments.
