Aisha Baloo09/25/2012Lab 5: Dating with Ceramics (Seriation) ObjectiveThe objective of the lab is to learn how to conduct frequency seriation, a relative dating method, by observing artifact attributes of ceramics. Sample/Materials The materials included eight different bags of ceramics. In addition, there were ten (10) different ceramics in each bag. The ceramics types were described as, White with Blue Stripes, Terra Cotta, Blue Flowers, Little Strips, Black and Brown, Pinkish Triangles, Green, Red/Pink, Big Triangles, and Ugly Flowers. Additionally, each ceramic had a distinct pattern. Graphing paper, scissors, and tape were provided to record the frequency of ceramics. MethodsAt the beginning of the lab, individuals were paired up into groups of two (2). Each lab pair received a ceramic bag. Each ceramic bag represented an archaeological site. There were about eight different lab stations or archaeological sites. Next, groups were instructed to visit the eight (8) different lab stations to record the frequency of ceramics. For example, for each ceramic type, the number of pieces from each station or “archaeological site” was recorded on a table (ex. fromSite 1, there were one “White and Blue Strips” and seven “Terra Cotta”, etc.). Each station had a different number of ceramics types.
