Social Studies Differentiation Part 1: Lesson Plan Grade level: 2 nd Grade Social studies standard: NY: 2.2a People living in urban, suburban, and rural communities embrace traditions and celebrate holidays that reflect both diverse cultures and common community identity. Arts standard: ” NY: VA.Cr1.2.2a – Create art or design with various materials and told to explore personal interests, questions, and curiosity. Learning objective: Students will show their understanding of a holiday that is celebrated by another culture and/or country by sharing what they learned about the holiday and creating unique symbols to represent the important components of that holiday. 1-2 learning objectives: Students will understand what holidays and festivals important parts of different cultures are by researching different traditions and participating in class discussions. Description of the learning activity that integrates social studies and the arts (100-150 words) : This learning activity that integrates social studies and the arts is creating an in-class polar express train including students’ train ticket s and students writ ing about their family traditions and drawing a picture to match the description. The recreation of the polar express was one way of keeping students engaged in the lesson and for them to have some fun. Having students draw and write about their family traditions lets them learn about their peers ’ cultures and traditions as well as have them draw a picture based on their description. Any questions other stud ents may have when presenting their family traditions/celebrations will be answered by the student presenting.
