PHIL 105: Class Notes 11/30/07 Peak Oil Ethical Issues 1. Feasibility 2. Ethical Problems a. Public Policy Nonrenewable Resources Gas Uranium Water Life Boat Ethics Traditional Ethics Underlying most ethical thought at present is the assumption that human life is the  highest good. What do we mean by human life? Is each presently existing human being to be kept alive and breeding regardless of the  consequences for future human beings? Apparently, say amiable, individualistic, present-oriented, future-blind Western ethicists. Traditional ethics has almost entirely ignored the claims of posterity—future people. In an overpopulated world, humanity cannot long endure under a regime governed by  posterity-blind ethics. He is working with the idea that human population has an S-shaped curve and goes up to a  carrying capacity and oscillates around that line. To avoid the crashing of population we need to develop ethics. Utilitarianism Ethics depends on public harm or public good rather than motives. One must examine the consequences. Can evaluate the act and the consequences of the act, but determining the motive is determining  if the person is good. We want to determine if the policy or the act is good. Lifeboat Ethics Lifeboats have limited capacity. Lifeboats should not be filled to capacity to that each will maintain a safety factory
