CHAPTERS 1 – THE SCIENCE OF SEX Choices, Information, and Decision Making - Many issues are moral issues  what you think is right and wrong - Gathering information helps us make the decisions we make - Understanding is on the pathway to success o Leads to respect o Respect vital for conflict resolution and establishing healthy relationships What is Human Sexuality - Various meanings to the word “sex” - Sex: o Gender o Anatomical structures (+sexual) Reproduction Sexual pleasures o Physical activities involving sex organs for reproduction or pleasure - Sex relates to: o Erotic feelings  Arousing sexual feelings or desires o Experiences o Desires: Fantasies Thoughts Sexual urges Feelings of sexual attraction - “Sex” usually reserved for anatomical or biological categories - Gender  refers to social or cultural categories - Gender roles complex clusters of the ways males and females are expected to behave within a given culture - Human sexuality  the ways we experience and express ourselves as sexual beings Sex as Leisure
- Meaney and Rye – conceptualized sex as fun, healthy activity considered leisure when it is voluntary, not seen as work, and serves some personal need o If not voluntary, seen as work and an obligation - Sexuality is important part of identity o Esp important for gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered people o Also people who are in sadomasochism - Sexual self-actualization: a state in which a person is comfortable with his or her sexuality Study of Human Sexuality - Various disciplines study this since it involves: o Biological capabilities o Psychological characteristics o Social and cultural influences - Biologists: o Inform us about the physiological mechanisms of sexual arousal and response - Medical science: o Teaches us about STIs o Biological base of sexual dysfunction - Psychologists: o Let us know how our sexual behaviours and attitudes are shaped by perception, learning, thought, motivation, emotion, and personality - Sociologists: o Study socioculture contexts of sexual behaviours Ie. relationship between sexual behaviours of humans and those of other animals - Sex research organisations: o Sex information and education council of Canada [SIECCAN] Journal of human sexuality Canadian sex research forum o International organizations: Society for the scientific study of sexuality [SSSS] Journal of sex research World association for sexual health [WAS] Canadian Society and Sexuality - Muslims believe in female circumsition  removal of clit and labia
o Considered female mutilation - Sex is considered a taboo subject Sexuality and Ethics: - All societies have their restrictions and what is considered unacceptable sexual behaviour - Sexual ethics  governs what societies consider unacceptable behaviours - Meaney and Rye analyzed three distinct ethical frameworks: o Ethics of divinity o Community o Autonomy 1.
