Alcoholism is known as a primary, chronic  disease characterized by impaired control  over drinking, preoccupation of alcohol as a  drug, distortions of thought, and use of drug  despite adverse consequences. Term first used in 1849 by a Physician by the  name of Magnus Huss to describe systematic  adverse effects of alcohol In the U.S. the term began to gain popularity  because of the growth of Alcoholic  Anonymous Groups in 1939
