Mise en scene (meez-on-sen) Literally, whatever that is “within the frame” but more importantly, the arrangement of visual elements within the frame. Everything that appears before the camera within a shot. It includes all planned elements such as set, props, actors, lighting, space, costumes, etc.

The representation of space affects the reading of a film. Mise en scene can be manipulated to determine mood or relationship between elements within the diegetic world. Mise en scene not only heighten the emotionality of the action, sometimes it substitutes for it. It represents the emotions and conflicts that the film’s narrative and characters cannot articulate.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
