MANAGING THE TEACHING IN A MULTIGRADE CLASSROOMWhen you have a wide range of abilities, and often in different ages, all togetherin the same room, it is not always effective to try to teach the class as a whole in allsubjects and all the time. There are a number of teaching strategies that a Multigradeteacher could use. These strategies are equally as useful in a traditional classroom ofone grade level.1. WHOLE CLASS TEACHINGThis is the simplest approach for the teacher. There is only one lesson toprepare and the lesson is aimed at the average ability in the class. It is easier for youto keep an eye on the students and keep good disciplineThere are disadvantages for the Multigrade situation if you use this way of teaching allthe time. The whole class teaching is often very teacher centredThe lesson is aimed at the average student and in the Multigrade classroom, there will be a wide range of abilities.
