Advantages & Disadvantages of Shortening Projects2Advantages & Disadvantages of Shortening ProjectsIn some situations project manager will have to get theproject schedule shortened. One method for accomplishing this isby shortening the durations of the activities in the criticalpath. This can be done by allocating more resources to performthe activities or by making changes in the scope. ProjectCrashing and Fast Tracking are two methods useful for shorteningthe project schedule.Crashing is a technique for schedule compression. It makesa trade-offs between the schedule and cost for obtaining thegreatest amount of schedule compression for the leastincremental cost. Crashing can be done by bringing in additionalresources or working overtime or by paying extra to get thecritical path activities delivered more quickly. Consider anexample of applying security patches to all systems in thedatacenter.Assume the duration was initially set as one month andthere is only one resource working on it part time. If there isa decision to expedite the task due to security threats, thereis a requirement of schedule compression. The options here willbe either assigning the resource to full time or adding moreresources to complete the task, or getting the tasks donequickly by engaging resources overtime. These options are partof crashing and help in reducing the activity duration. The

Project manager has to take in to account theslack available in non-critical activities. That helps in makingsure the crashing is not impacting other activities in theCritical path of the project. The project manager also has toensure the cost involved in crashing a project does not exceedthe penalty costs. Crashing has to be done from the leastexpensive to the most expensive tasks. Crashing has to be doneonly for activities that are critical."Fast-tracking" is often the most effective way to shortenthe duration of a project. You can fast-track a project byscheduling tasks that were originally scheduled to run one afterthe other to run instead at the same time. Although they don'tknow it, the folks who drive to work while simultaneouslydrinking coffee, putting on your pants, and reading thenewspaper are fast-tracking their commutes. And much like theseharrowing trips, fast-tracking comes with its share of risks.Consider a dinner party you're hosting for your family andfriends. Instead of cooking the main course and then preparing adessert while your guests are chatting, you ask your partner tomake the dessert so that you can grill the main dish. When fast-tracking works, you can cut out some time from the schedulewithout sacrificing scope or quality and often at no additionalcost. Not only are the main course and the dessert ready at the
