Ronnie Deng COM 340 Oct 23 rd : Cognitive Dissonance Theory of Leon Festinger Define: The cognitive dissonance theory of Leon Festinger, which is revised in three other ways later on, argues that people are expected to experience a psychological stage called cognitive dissonance when their behavior and belief don’t fit, and this experience is abhorrent and people are highly motivated to dodge it by avoiding hearing ideas that oppose their own, changing their beliefs to match their actions, and seeking encouragement after making a difficult decision. Develop: Starting from the sour grapes story from Aesop’s fable, Em Griffin, the author, introduces us to the concept of cognitive dissonance as a uncomfortable experience when one’s action and opinions or beliefs are mismatched, and it’s defined as a aversive drive that “goads us to be consistent (1).” However, because of the basic need to avoid the dissonance, Festinger states that people who undergo such mental discomfort from cognitive conflict will attempt to reduce the discomfort and achieve consonance.
