Wadsworth 1 Renee Wadsworth English 101.16 Dr. Battaglia March 3, 2008 Causes and Effects of Genetic Testing Being a very healthy teenage girl, I, Renee Wadsworth, like author David Duncan, have little reason for needing to be screened for the full gamut of a genetic-disease markers. I would not want to know the glitches in my life system for I am healthy, with no apparent problems. If I were to contract a serious illness, I would rather hear about it when the time comes. Finding out such things, so early in life would be completely devastating. Duncan arrives at Doctor Andi Braun’s office. Dr. Braun informs Duncan about the malfunctions he has in the threads of his DNA, and the potential problems they could cause him later in his life. As Duncan sits behind the doctor, he sees a list of “SNPs pop up on the screen: connexin 26, implicated in hearing loss; factor V leiden, which causes blood clots; and slpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, linked to lung and liver disease” (264). If I were to find out this news about myself, I wouldn’t know how to react. I would be worried for
