Leadership come in multiple styles and approaches, we all utilize our skills differently and in myopinion a leadership style is built over time. Leadership skills are defined as the ability to useone’s knowledge and competencies to accomplish a set of goals or objectives. (Northouse, 2012).Reaching a position where you are leading the individuals around you may take years in certainprofessions. Advancing to a position of authority in come with a great responsibility and takingthat burden eon is not for everyone. The ability to work your way up that proverbial ladder andreaching a level of success where you influence the culture of an organization is no easy task andshould be celebrated as a great accomplishment. Throughout history people have debated whatmakes a great leader and how to hone those skills to “create” a great leader.Leadership in my professional life over the last 15 years has been a part of my dailyroutine. As a military professional I understand how leaders can inspire those around them togreatness. I strive to achieve a balance of accountability and celebration for the accomplishmentsfor the Marines under my charge. I was always taught to push not only yourself but those aroundyou. Throughout this course we have discussed multiple philosophies and leadership practices.The philosophies and approaches I closely mimic will be discussed in-depth in this essay. I willalso explore the ways I plan to improve my leadership style as well as the leadership styles ofthose around me.
