College-level answers are expected: For essay questions (even if semi-multiple choice) clearly explain your answers. Just the correct answer without reasoning is insufficient. There are ten questions to this exam and seven pages, including the cover page. Make sure that you have all ten questions and all seven pages now. There are 100 points on this exam.

CHEM 123 Spring 2005 Dr. Franz Exam #1 (KEY) 4 MULTIPLE CHOICE: 1) D 2) B 3) A 4) E 5) E 6) C 7) C 8. (25 points) a) The following triene undergoes an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction to give a bicyclic product. Show the flow of electrons during the reaction and propose a structural formula for the product. Would you expect this reaction to proceed under mild reaction conditions (i.e. low temperature for example)? EXPLAIN your reasoning. The reaction can be expected to proceed under somewhat milder conditions than usual for Diels-Alder reactions. The reason is that the carbonyl group with its electron-withdrawing character lowers the energy of the LUMO in the dienophile. This in turn results in a smaller energy gap between the HOMO of the diene and the LUMO of the dienophile and, therefore, makes the reaction occur more easily at lower temperature.
