TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING As a nation, we claim to love cats and dogs. Millions of households have pets, and billions of dollars are spent yearly on pet supplies and food. Every day in this country, thousands of puppies and kittens are born. But sadly, there aren’t enough good homes for all of them. This is where your local animal shelter comes in. SHELTER FROM THE STORM T here’s a place in your community where the hungry are fed, the homeless are sheltered, and the abandoned are comforted. It’s your local animal shel- ter, where care is provided for your area’s homeless animals. Each year, mil- lions of animals enter U.S. animal shelters. From city-run animal control agencies to private humane societies and breed rescue groups, organizations that take in homeless animals share the burden of pet overpopulation.
