Unit IV Essay There are many sources and beneficial uses of municipal solid waste (MSW). A few sources include the residential waste and waste from commercial and institutional locations, such as businesses, schools and hospitals. This waste can include everyday items such as product packaging, yard trimmings, furniture, clothing, bottles and cans, food, newspapers, appliances, electronics and batteries. The beneficial use of solid waste saves landfill capacity for materials that do not have alternative uses and reduces the amount of raw materials used. The use of MSW both provide effective mitigation of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions through landfill gas recovery and improved landfill practices, and can avoid significant GHG generation through controlled composting, integrated waste to energy facilities, and/or expanded collection services. MSW consist of two types which includes refuse and trash. Refuse is characterized within two types garbage and rubbish. Their differences are that garbage mainly consist of putrescible or highly decomposable food waste like meats and vegetables. Where is, rubbish consist of mostly dry and non- putrescible materials like paper and rubber. Trash on the other hand consist of bulky waste materials like old furniture and appliances, these usually require special handling which result in not being collected on routine basis. All MSW has to be collected some way or another, to do so collection trucks are strategically used. The four characteristics of optimum routing of MSW collection trucks are: 1.
