Course OutlineLearning objectives:At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to …1. Discuss the defining diagnostic features of each major disorder covered.2. Discuss the current state of the literature regarding psychological treatment approachesfor the major disorders covered.3. Critically evaluate and analyze recent empirical studies on the major disorders covered.4. Critically evaluate the current diagnostic nosology and relevant diagnostic debates forthe major disorders covered.5. Debate the role of cultural factors in the assessment, presentation, diagnosis, andtreatment of the major disorders covered.Course Philosophy:The course is designed to stimulate your thinking and curiosity about how our fieldattempts to assist and help individuals who are experiencing psychological and emotionaldistress.As such, the course covers a rather huge topic with different approaches,techniques and unanswered questions.It is my goal to give you a solid introductoryfoundation regarding the theory and practice of psychopathology with all of its ambiguityand complexity.This is an advanced undergraduate course and I am assuming that youalready have a good background in research methodology, personality theories andbehavior disorders.Thus, our class time will be spent observing, thinking about,discussing, and/or otherwise encountering the topics under consideration.It will beimportant for the success of the course that we take the subject matter with an open mindand a note of maturity about the difficult issues we will be confronting.Course Reading MaterialRequired readings have been compiled in a customizedCoursepackwhich is availablefor purchase at the Concordia bookstore. Additional readings will be placed on theMoodle course page over the course of the semester, and will be announced in class.
