Soc 001 Section 004 MATTA 3/31/08 PERSPECTIVES Conflict Perspective : disorder, social inequality is neither a societal necessity nor a source of social order—Primary sourse of conflit, coercion and unhappiness Stratifications ultimately rests on the unequal distribution of resources Conflict that yields change=not often Capitalists (bourgeoisie): own means of production and purchase labor of others Workers (proletariat): do not own means of production and don’t purchase labor of others Petite/petty Bourgeoisie : own means of production but don’t purchase labor of others (self employed) Marx —ownership over control False Consciousness : situation in which people in lower-class come to accept a belief system that harms them. Primary means by which powerful classes in society prevent protest and revolution Dahrendorf (’59): argues that class stratification has more to do w/ differing levels of authority among society Authority: possession of some status or quality that compels others to obey
