2 Social Studies Differentiation Part 1: Lesson Plan Grade level: 5 th Grade Social studies standard: 5.14 Analyze the distinct way of knowing and living amongst the different American Indian tribes of North America prior to contact in the late 15th and 16th centuries, such as religion, language, and cultural practices and the subsequent impact of that contact. Arts standard: 1.CR1.5 - 1. Generate ideas for an artwork based on cultural influences or social issues. 2. Use formal and conceptual vocabularies of art and design to describe a work of art (e.g. elements & principles of design). 3. Constructively design and manipulate materials, organizational and compositional elements to make meaning in a work of art. Learning objective: Students will be able to describe the use of baskets in Native American tribes prior to colonial American contact. Students will be able to use appropriate learned vocabulary to describe Native American baskets. Students will be able to manipulate materials to create a basket. 1-2 learning objectives: Students will be able to describe the use of baskets in Native American tribes prior to colonial American contact. Students will be able to use appropriate learned vocabulary to describe Native American baskets. Description of the learning activity that integrates social studies and the arts (100-150 words): After students have learned background information about Native Americans, their culture, and the uses of baskets in different cultures, they will participate in creating their own baskets. Students will first be asked about their knowledge of baskets and their uses. I will record their answers in a graphic organizer. Next, I will read the book Basket by George Ella Lyons. New, learned information will be added to our graphic organizer. Students will present or talk about baskets they have in their home and what they are used for. Students will be shown a basket- making tutorial and be given written instructions. They will work in small groups to complete
