Metals have high stiffness and strength, toughness, good electrical conductivity and good thermal conductivity where as Ceramics although stiff and strong are very brittle, they are excellent insulators. They do not conduct heat or electricity as well as metals and can also be transparent unlike metals. 2.2. Metals can be divided into two main groups: Ferrous - Steels and Cast Irons Non Ferrous - aluminum, copper, etc 2.3. Alloy- is a metal that is composed of two or more elements with at leas one being a metallic element. 2.4. Steel is an iron carbon alloy containing 0.02% to 2.11% carbon ( most steels contain 0.05% and 1.1% carbon). 2.5. Cast irons are an iron alloy containing 2.1% to 4% carbon. 2.6. Some common Steel alloying ingredients include Manganese, chromium, nickel and molybdenum. 2.7. The predominant element usually found in stainless steels is chromium. 2.8. It is called austenitic is because this alloy exists in its austenitic phase at room temperature. This is because Nickel has the effect of enlarging the authentic temperature to
