Simplifying Fractions I. Writing a Number as a Product of Primes We call a whole number greater than one prime if it cannot be divided evenly except by itself and one. For example the number 7 is prime but the number 6 is not, because 6 = 2 x 3 A number that is not prime is called composite . The first primes are 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,29,31,37,41,43,47,53 These are all prime One of the most common uses of primes is to write a number as a product of primes. Example Write the number 140 as a product of prime numbers. Solution We write 140 = 10 x 14 = (2 x 5) x (2 x 7) = 2 x 2 x 5 x 7 We can also use a factor tree to write a number as a product of primes Example Write the number 882 as a product of primes using a factor tree.
