Are portable e-reader superior to print books?
Can you envision a society in which print books are no longer available? That day is
nearing so fast. Reading an actual print book may be considered a thing of the past with the
invention of smartphones, e-book readers, and e-reader applications. There are several reasons
why print books will become obsolete soon. One of these reasons is that e-books are gradually
replacing paper books. Another possible explanation would be that print books are becoming
defunct.
The counterargument will assert that e-books and print books can coexist. Conversely, with all
the technology available today, the print book will become outdated as e-books and technology
related to the e-books begin to takeover.
For starters, printed books are more efficient for readers. According to Riordan
(2013), researchers discovered that “those who read digital text had to study and repeat the
material several times before understanding the content as well as those who read print text” (4).
E-books and their e-reader elements are rapidly displacing print books. “As we well know, e-
book sales are now outpacing hardback sales, and publishers are now crowing e-book numbers
alongside their traditional in-store sales numbers,” according to the article The Future of Books:
A Dystopian Timeline (Biggs 4-7). This means that e-books outnumber print books in terms of
sales. These are decreasing the number of print book sales in stores. E-books are also

considerably smaller than print books. E-books could be read on e-readers, some of which are
only an inch thick.
One advantage of e-books that appeals to everyone is their portability; they take
up very little space and are accessible. People can, for example, carry thousands of books with
them in their Amazon kindle while traveling, but it is difficult to put so many paper books into a
single luggage. To be truthful, e-books are lightweight; nevertheless, instead of focusing solely
