2 COMMUNITY POLICING Law Enforcement and Technology Introduction When a law enforcement officer is seen by the public, they see a person that is there maintain peace and order of their community. They don’t think of what that officer has to do to maintain that or what the law enforcement community has to endure to maintain this. Of course, upholding traffic laws are easy as an officer can detect and stop speeders, break-ins can be stopped by police presence; many crimes can be prevented by presence alone. Even with the police presence, there is still one area that law enforcement presence isn’t enough and that is crimes that come down to technology. There are issues affecting law enforcements ability to maintain a community’s peace and order without affecting the community member’s civil liberties. Law enforcement has to find ways to alleviate these concerns while maintaining a sense of privacy in their community member’s minds. Technological issues Technology in this generation is a fast moving, ever-evolving aspect of society. Things we could only imagine 20 years ago we now have. One glaring issue when it comes to law enforcement and technology is the security that technology is gaining. Many cell phones come password protected or have a fingerprint or facial recognition protections on them. Because most of society, estimated 292.8 million active wireless subscribers (Kwan, n.d.), cell phones can be tied back to crime by law enforcement.
