2 The Evolution of Same-Sex Marriage in the United States The look on marriage has changed a lot over the years. There was a point where same-sex marriage was not thought about, let alone was legal. As early as 1993, the United States lawmakers and courts have had to answer whether same-sex couples should be allowed to get married. In 1993 the Supreme Court in Hawaii had a case where the plaintiffs were refused a marriage license because they were a same-sex couple. The couple claimed they were denied their individual rights to equal treatment. The state argued that it had an interest in preventing same-sex marriages, as same-sex marriage would damage the public. The court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, with the ruling that denial of same-sex marriage was unconstitutional under the state constitution.
