Hello Maria, I agree with everything you said. A significant difference between working with adults and children is their ability to communicate and conceptualize. Children will communicate as much or more with their actions as their words. Eco maps help with this as they allow the child to visualize their situation. Letting them draw their ecomap will give you even more insight. The spacing, coloring, and sizing of the individuals can tell you information. Some examples would be the size of the parents in comparison to each other. Also, the spacing is a direct correlation to the closeness of the family. I had a professor that was certified in play therapy, and we were allowed to observe a session. Afterward, we talked about the symbolism of the child’s choices. In the Case of Claudia (2014), they also used play therapy. Like an ecomap, the child will show you more about the family dynamic than they can express.
