Keith, I think that using CBT with Brady can be effective. Also, it does not seem that his father acknowledges Brady’s disabilities. He refers to Brady’s behaviors instead of talking about Brady’s disabilities. To avoid a dual role and so that I could focus on Brady, I would suggest referring Steve to a counselor as well. He needs to be better educated on working with Brady’s disabilities and needs some help himself. As a recently widowed person, he has things he need help dealing with. With Steve, I would suggest resilience theory as a survivor. He could maintain his mental health and learn how to raise a child with disabilities. Jim Maria, As you have stated, Brady is afraid of his father. As a result of Steve’s actions, child protective services have been called in (Plummer et al., 2013). While I don’t think they will remove Brady from the home, they may recommend Steve attend parenting classes. In those classes, he can learn how to better deal with Brady and his disabilities.
