 Know glaucoma
 Know cataracts
 You can remove cataracts, but you cannot remove glaucoma
 S/S for both
 Teaching/complications to know after both surgeries (no vacuuming, no lifting anything,
don’t exert pressure)
 Drops for glaucoma (know the med names) – decreases inflammation/pressure
 Know how to give eye drops
Mobility
 Osteoarthritis – NOT CAUSED BY INFLAMMATION – do not give NSAIDs. Can give Tylenol.
What kind of teaching (use 1 pillow to sleep at night)
 Back pain – start with NSAID for pain bc of inflammation
 Weak opioid (Tramadol/Ultram) will help with back pain
 Muscle relaxers – Methocarbamol (robaxin), Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) – cause
drowsiness. Do not reduce inflammation
 Know NSAIDs and that they can cause GI bleeding
 Know S/S for hip dislocation (leg shorter, very painful)
 You want to ABDucts legs after hip replacement – not ADDuct
 Crepitus – snap. Crackle, pop (sound it makes)
 Know about CSF leak – you do not want to see halo on dressing after back surgery –
signifies CSF leak – call doc!!!
Nutrition
 BMI – overweight, obese, morbidly obese. What does this put you as risk for? Know
complications for being overweight

