Unformatted text preview: January 9, 2008 Early Rome • Roman History o 753 BCE – Rome founded Based on ancient sources, equated to modern methods Archaeological finds date back further o 509 BCE – Republic established Radical change from rule by kings Rapid expansion on Rome o 27 BCE – Empire established (dynasties) Divided into family dynasties (father to son) • Italy and Geography o Eastern mountains act as barrier Makes most development on the western border Also means not much fertile land on eastern part of peninsula • Due to volcanic activity, not always a good thing (ex: Pompeii) • Historic People o To the South – Greeks Not a unified country, politically Come over in 8 th century BCE o To the North – Etruscans Don’t know where they came from, just always there Very sophisticated civilization o In the middle – tribal peoples Some end up making up the Roman people On lower end of society spectrum Heavily influenced by Greeks and Etruscans...
