February 25, 2008 Augustus and Augustan Literature (Horace and Virgil) Augustus – First Citizen of Rome (27 BCE – 14 CE) Political moves o Consul (“I transferred the Republic from my power to the charge of the Senate and the Roman people.”) o Created a “super-province” (Spain, Gaul, and Syria) – put himself in charge o Portrays himself as not “power hungry” o “super province” geographically surrounds Rome Also controls military of the lands Augustus’ legions o Army swore oath of loyalty to him, not to Senate or Republic Control of… o Military – see above oath o Legislation – becomes tribune o Finances o Foreign policy o Entitled to appoint a successor (dynasty) o Sort of quiet take-over, nobody objects to the steps he takes – they seem legit Augustus’ message (propaganda) o Builder and Restorer Res Gestae – deeds of Augustus “when I came to Rome it was a city of brick, but I leave it a city of marble” o Peace and prosperity
