Anthro 2A 19 April 2007 Franz Boas - Challenged the unilineal perspective of his time - He supported Multilinealism - In an effort to promote a multilinear approach to anthropology divided the discipline into four fields (In the United States). - He used the four fields in a way to combat unilinealist perspectives Archaeology (Under Boas) - Boas taught his students to use this field to think about or study how all cultures have developed and changed over time - He used it to demonstrate that no contemporary society is living “in the stone-age” Physical Anthropology (Under Boas) - Boas and his students used this field to demonstrate that all societies are fully human. (Many slaughterings of different natives/peoples happened because the unilateral thinking at the time said that some societies were not human) Linguistic Anthropology (Under Boas) - Use language to show that all societies have similar linguistic structures, and that all societies have fully developed, complex languages. Cultural Anthropology (Under Boas) - Boas and his students studied culture in an effort to demonstrate that all human societies are highly complex, and all societies have complex cultures
