Philosophy 101 November 26, 2006 Writing Assignment #4 Freud has made a great impact in the field of psychology and philosophy because of his theories and views on enlightenment. However, there are several other well-known philosophers who have different or conflicting versions of enlightenment and how to achieve it, and one of them is Descartes. I believe that Freud would not agree with Descartes’s view on enlightenment because Descartes puts a lot of focus on the belief that we are in control of our minds, while Freud thinks we do not. Not only that, but one of Descartes’s first “undeniable truths” was that there is a perfect god. This is another aspect that Freud would be in conflict with because he does not believe in god or the idea of religion in general. Descartes’s conception of enlightenment came from his long and detailed method of radical doubt. He believed that to achieve enlightenment, one had to find absolute truths that could have no reasonable doubt. Keeping this in mind through his meditations, he tore down all his prior beliefs and thoughts that could be doubted even the slightest bit, and began with the one thing that he believed he received most of his perceptions from: his senses.
