Chemistry 6/06/06 Ch2 Vocabulary Law of Convervation of Mass – matter cannot be created or destroyed, just rearranged Diffusion – the natural movement of one substance through another Dynamic Equilibrium – a situation in which the rate of the forward process equals the rate of the reverse process Atomic number – the number of protons in an atom, defines the identity Mass number – the number of protons plus the number of neutrons Isotopes – elements that contain the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons Mass spectrometer – an instrument which determines the mass of an element or molecule by removing an electron from the substance being analyzewd then separating charged particles with a magnetic field Ion – charged species resulting from the gain or loss of electrons from a neutral atom or molecule Cation – a positively charged ion Anion – a negatively charged ion Polyatomic – an ion that contains more than one atom Ionic compound – a solid that contants cations and anions in balanced whole-number
