Uniform crime reports- An annual FBI publication that summarizes the incidence and rate of reported crimes throughout the United States. National Crime Victimization Survey- An annual survey of selected American households conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics to determine the extent of criminal victimization. Dark figure of crime- Crime that is not reported to the police and that remains unknown to the officials. Bureau of Justice Statistics- Responsible for the collecting of criminal justice data. Crime Index- Sums the occurrences of eight major (Part I) offenses; murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny theft, motor vehicle theft, arson. Violent Crime- A UCR offense category that includes murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Property Crime- A UCR offense category that includes burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. 1. Murder- the unlawful killing of one human being by another. First-Degree Murder- criminal homicide that is planned or involves premeditation. Second-degree Murder- an intentional and unlawful killing but one that is generally unplanned and that may happen “in the heat of passion.” Mass Murder- the killing of four or more victims at one location within one event. Serial Murder- involves the killing of several victims in three or more separate events. 2. Rape- Unlawful sexual intercourse, achieved through force and without consent. Forcible Rape- The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will. Sexual Battery- Intentional and wrongful physical contact with a person, without his or her consent, that entails a sexual component or purpose. Statutory Rape- No force is involved but the victim is below the age of consent.
