Brittney Harris Responding to: Patricia A Adler and Peter Adler’s “Backboards and blackboards” Subject: Chapters 6-9 Record React “Everybody is expecting me to be that way…I never get to be a real person” (pg.160) “They evolved from role-playing into role- making” (pg.161) The players often do not get to act as themselves because of how the media has influenced their behavior. If they act out of their normal media role people get upset and worried. These media roles soon began to flow into the players everyday selves. “The psych game” (pg.168) This is the hope the coach gave the players of being in the NBA. The coach knew there were slim to none chances any one of his players would make it, but by instilling it in them that it is possible it insured that they would work to their full potential. “I feel like the school has used me and I have used the school.” (pg.195) This means the school and the athletes both benefited from each other. The athletes got greater social lives within the athletic role
