10/3/05 Charles Dickens uses several writing styles in the excerpt Hard Times ; using a narrator the writer engages the reader using engaging voice, original word choice, and effective sentence styles. The attitude of the narrator towards the speaker using various writing styles is detailed in the following passage. The narrator uses immense amount of detail to portray how boring and monotonous the speaker is; such as “The speaker’s hair, which bristled on the skirts of his bald head, a plantation of firs to keep the wind from its shining surface, all covered with knobs, like the crust of a plum pie, as if the head had scarcely warehouse-room for the hard facts stored inside.” Hard Times is set with the speaker in the front yelling about facts. The speaker is described as being square; “square wall of a forehead, which had his eyebrows for its base… square coat, square legs, square shoulders, and square finger”. The setting of Hard Times
