Germany's economy was decimated after World War I. The German reaction was divided,with most gravitating toward the democratic and republican parties’ wings. In 1919, the GermanWorkers Party was founded in this post-war environment. Adolf Hitler, a vehement anti-Semite,decided to join this party. He rose through the ranks to become their leader.The party was renamed the National Socialist German Workers' Party, or the Nazi partyin English, in 1920. The party expanded significantly under Hitler's leadership. At this earlystage, the Nazis promised to deprive Jews of their citizenship and to remove Jews fromGermany. Hitler derisively referred to Jews as parasites, maggots, and liars. The Nazi Party wasoutlawed in late 1923, but Hitler resurrected it in 1925.
