Shakespeare Study Sheet Final Exam Metaphor: a word or phrase for one thing that is used to refer to another thing in order to show or suggest that they are similar; an object, activity, or idea that is used as a symbol of something else. Two types: a simile , where two unlike things are compared followed by a figurative example; an analogy , where a literal comparison is made between two things. Both types of metaphors typically use the word like or as followed by the comparison. Ex “all the world’s a stage” or “fishing in a sea of grief” The Tempest Characters: Prospero- ex-duke of Milan and father of Miranda. Was usurped by his brother, Antonio. He has been on island 12 years and has practiced magical abilities. Miranda- compassionate and generous; she is naïve about the world because she has never seen other humans Ariel- spirit released from imprisonment by Prospero-he is his servant until released, no form really-does Prospero’s bidding Caliban- Son of Sycoax (servant)-wants island and schemes to take it-speaks sometimes coarse and brutal (drunk w Trincilo) and sometimes eloquent Ferdinand- son/heir of Alonso, pure, loves Miranda Alonso- Helped usurp Prospero-however regrets bad actions like that and having his daughter married to Prince of Tunis-reason they were on ship from Africa Antonio- Prospero’s brother, power-hungry, foolish, tries to get Sebastian to kill Alonso Sebastian- Alonso’s brother, aggressive and cowardly-easily persuaded to kill his brother then makes up story about lions Gonzalo- old, wise lord-helped Prospero escape-positive about everything like beauty of island and miracle of reconciliation Henry V Characters: Henry- recently crowned king of England, great leader, brave, pursues goals effectively, and inspires his troops-uses speaking skills to justify claims of invasion and inspire troops-critique on leader-he is forced to respond with Dauphin’s insult-Henry gives most important speeches during play rallying troops (St. Crispin’s, “Once more unto the breach, dear friends”-Harfleur battle, response to Dauphin’s insult) Dauphin- heir to French throne-arrogant-does more mocking then preparing to fight Catherine- daughter of king of France, married to Henry for peace King Charles- king of france-does not underestimate Henry like his son Fluellen- the most important captain for the English-gives important speech to other captain about Henry killing French soldiers-compares to Alaxander the great-provides comic relief Archbishop of Canterbury/ Bishop Ely- urge Henry to go to war and help him justify it for the sake of the church Othello Characters: Othello- good in all aspects and respected by all but falls prey to Llago because of
