James Mullen World Civilization 1 War Against the Cross Could the Crusades be considered a Christian Holy War? A very debatable topic. Avery touching topic depending on who you’re talking to. When Muslims today hear the word “Crusade” they flinch from the memories of those attacks from the cross so long ago, and even more recently. Around the time of 9/11, Bush made a comment about a crusade against terrorism which upset many Muslims. As Muslims believe that those Crusades back in the Eleventh Century were strictly Religious Holy Wars. Jonathan Phillips provides some very solid material that suggest the falseness of these beliefs. The Crusades of the Eleventh Century were not strictly a Religious Holy War but rather a war that used religion as a motivation to raise troops to battle. Jonathan Phillips, in his article “Who Were the First Crusaders?” explains that while religion may have played a big part in the Crusades of the Eleventh Century, it wasn’t the sole reason why the first crusaders went into battle against the Muslim Empires. Pope Urban II’s motivation to raise volunteer troops was a religious motivation no doubt. Whoever went on these
