After reading the article "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris, I thought it was an amusing essay about a mean, difficult foreign language instructor. While it has a humorous tone, that is not the point of the story. It is about overcoming anxiety in new situations. It is difficult because people don’t like to leave their safe zone. No one likes to be ridiculed if they don’t excel at something. It is about pushing past that discomfort and accomplishing your goals. It is about finding satisfaction even when those results are not what you anticipated. Testing your limits and doing something new is not an easy thing. Mr. Sedaris tells us he should have "completed his sentence in the prison of the nervous and the insecure". (Sedaris, 1999) Unfortunately, the author has not outgrown the insecurity they have multiplied. The authors' thoughts are both correct and universal. It is human nature to be apprehensive in an unfamiliar situation. Who has not felt unsure and unprepared on the first day of a new job or the first day of class.
