Sports OfficiatingPE180 Fall 2014Monday 4:00pm-5:15pmWoodruff PE Center Classroom 306Instructor: Ricky TalmanTelephone: 404-727-9114Office Hours: Tuesday/Thursday 10:30am-11:30amEmail:[email protected]Course Description:This course is a practical and theoretical study of officiating team Intramural Sports played at EmoryUniversity.It will include the study and practical application of officiating rules and mechanics in a campusrecreation setting with primary focus and game experience in Flag Football and Co-Rec Basketball.Course Objectives:Students will obtain a better understanding of the rules and game management of sports with the opportunity forfirst-hand experience.Additionally, students can develop leadership qualities and self-confidence in a fun, but challengingenvironment.Required Materials:All rules materials and officials stripes/whistles will be supplied.Comfortable, athletic clothing is needed forofficiating games.Black shorts or pants are preferred.Your Emory Student ID Card is required for admittance into the Woodruff PE Center classrooms,NoExceptions.If you miss class because you forgot your card, it will count as an absence.Course Expectations:Attendance:Attendance is mandatory.If you accumulate more than three (3) absences you will receive nocredit for this course, and a U or F will be awarded as circumstances dictate.There are NO excused absences.Unexcused absences include trips, appointments, interviews, conferences, illness, injury, official schoolbusiness, and religious holidays, as well as simply not showing up.There are additional out-of-classroom requirements for this course that do not take place during classtime.Attendance is mandatory for all out-of-classroom requirements.You cannot make up an out-of-classroom requirement.Once scheduled you are locked in to that day and time.Officiating:Officiating intramural sports games is a requirement of this class!Students will be required toofficiate actual Intramural Co-Rec basketball games throughout the course of the semester.Working shiftsoutside of class time is required.You may also get paid to work for us if you so choose.Upon completing payroll paperwork students can bepaid for working games outside of class time.There is no maximum number of games a student can work.Depending on the ability and comfort level, some students may have the opportunity to continue working intothe playoffs for each sport.Students that do not show up for assigned shifts will receive no credit for this course and a U or F will beawarded as circumstances dictate.Students will be officiating actual Intramural contests and their behavior andactions should contribute to, and not interfere with, the successful operation of the Intramural program.
Reading:There is no text book for this class but I will assign material to read.The text or links for all requiredreadings will be sent via email.
