When x-rays are sent into a crystal, they are scattered by the atoms of the crystal. The x-rays scattered from each atom in the crystal interfere with one another to give a characteristic x-ray diffraction pattern. ET: Light also acts as a particle (Bohr atom theory; photoelectric effect). ET: Wave-particle duality DeBroglie theorem: λ= h/mv ET: Oxtoby, Gillis and Nachtrieb: From de Broglie’s generalization, such diffraction should also be observed when a beam of electrons is sent into a crystal. In 1927 C. Davisson and L.H. Germer showed that electrons are, in fact, diffracted by a crystal and that de Broglie’s relationship correctly
