Marinov 1 Victoria Marino Professor Tanya Franklin English 120 2 October 2014 Fairytale Journal Fairytales are an interesting genre and provide some of the more enjoyable stories that we have looked at in class. The story Jack and the Devil’s Daughter , written by Julius Lester, is my personal favorite (Lester). This story has many of the elements that are typically associated with the fairytale genre. One such element is that the number “3” appears in the story. Jack is asked to finish 3 choirs for the Devil (Lester). Magic occurs in the story as well because the Devil and his daughter appear to possess supernatural abilities (Lester). There are some gray areas when it comes to determining who the “good” and “bad’ characters are in the story. The Devil is trying to kill Jack but Jack bet with him and went out of his way to come into contact with him (Lester). Jack is very full of himself and is satisfied with having others clean up the messes he has created for himself (Lester). The Devil is really only doing is job and it could be debated as the wheatear
