For the negotiation assignment I have decided to use my husband, Travis Allen, to role
play the scenario of Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Smith feuding. I played the role of Mrs. Smith, and my
husband played the role of Mrs. Jones. In the negotiation we set out with the goal of resolving
the conflict between the two moms and ensuring that Jenny and Ashley are able to continue
being friends while establishing boundaries to ensure there is not another similar conflict. In this
scenario the conflict began with Mrs. Jones experiencing extreme emotions and Mrs. Smith
being confused of the situation at hand, not allowing for each party to be equally heard. Thus, we
were not able to continue the focus on the relationship between the two moms, and instead the
conflict became very competitive. Because Mrs. Jones was attacking Mrs. Smiths character and
identity by insulting her child rearing abilities, it led to Mrs. Smith feeling the need to defend
herself and her child.
During the role playing conflict we were not able to focus on listening and understanding
the others point of view, mostly because of how Mrs. Jones initially acted towards Mrs. Smith
leading to defensiveness and each mother ending up putting blame on the other for their
children’s actions. During the conflict it was evident the Mrs. Jones conflict style was
dominating and in this specific scenario Mrs. Smith had more of a collaborating approach to start
out, by the end of our scenario Mrs. Smith was also showing the dominating conflict style. The
cause of this was each mother feeling like they were in the right, and not slowing down to take

time to listen to the other. This conflict could have potentially been avoided if the two moms sat
down with their daughters and used it as a teaching moment for all four of them to learn about
conflict resolution.
