He works hard at his job but really doesn’t receive appreciation from his customers. The poem is in the perspective of the son whom he takes care of. I feel the son’s point of view shows that he appreciates his father even if others don’t. In the poem the son says, “What did I know, what did I know of love’s austere and lonely offices” (line 13-14). The son is basically saying that he is too young to understand the love his father has for his job. Even though the father loves his job he doesn’t receive love on a personal level and basically lives a lonely life. Journal nine: Billy Collins’ “Introduction to Poetry”I believe the message Billy Collins is trying to provide in his poem is that poetry is art, art is supposed to look at, listened to, and appreciated.
