BCC Staff Bios The staff of the Sonja Haynes Stone Black Cultural Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seek to uphold the spirit of late Carolina faculty member Dr. Sonja Haynes Stone. Their work integrates cultural concerns with community outreach. Our work also emphasizes social justice and responsibility, and support for academic engagement. Within and beyond the boundaries of the academy. Dr. Joseph F. Jordan is the director of the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a faculty member in the Department of African/Afro-American Studies. For more than 20 years, he has been a educator, researcher and program manager in the arts and in cultural heritage work. He has spent time investigating topics including black radical theory, black popular culture, African American culture and social change, Southern African liberation struggles, Pan-Africanism, black intellectuals, Amilcar Cabral and the National Liberation Movement in Cape Verde. This work has taught him to value the central role that culture plays in social change. He has held faculty positions at Howard University, Antioch College and Xavier University. His work in progress includes African-Americans and Native Americans: Explorations in Narrative Identity and Place, a collection of essays on Black and Native American interactions. His latest work is as curator of Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America, currently on exhibit at the M.L. King, Jr., National Historic Site in Atlanta. He currently serves as a member of the boards of the Grassroots Leadership Institute and the North Carolina Humanities Council.
