Eman Raja April 9, 2021 Chem Lab Expt 10 - Heats of Reaction and Solution Summary: Enthalpy is an extensive property which means it is proportional to the size of the system. Heat can be either endothermic process or exothermic process. Instead of the total enthalpy being measured, the enthalpy change of a system is measured to figure out the total heat. The enthalpy change is shown as Delta H = H(final) – H(Initial). The enthalpy change when heat is absorbed from or released to the surroundings is called heat of solution or molar enthalpy of solution and represented by Delta Hsolution. Heat of a reaction can be measured by the formula of mass of the solution times the C times delta T. Another topic covered in this lab is Hess’s law. Hess’s law states that the total enthalpy change during chemical reaction is the same whether the reaction was in one step or several steps. Hess’s law comes from the principle of conservation of energy which is also expressed in the first law of thermodynamics. Enthalpy is a state function,
