Synthesis Paper 2 The common element shared between the three academic articles is socialization and developing a scholarly identity. Socialization, a critical part of the success of doctoral students, is the process by which the skills and knowledge necessary for a future professional career are obtained. The doctoral journey, a 3-to-7-year path, is at times difficult. Some students might have doubts or negative thoughts about completing the program, while others withdraw from the program entirely. In addition, doctoral students may feel like impostors and compare themselves unfavorably to their peers, concluding that they were not at par and thus inadequate (Chakraverty, 2020). Through socialization and the realization that many students have similar thoughts, doctoral students can overcome imposter syndrome and accept that the doctoral process will come with successes as well as failures. Socialization assists online doctoral students in obtaining a sense of belonging and community. In addition, socialization can aid in the creation of a scholarly identity. "Doctoral programs are opportunities for socialization into an academic discipline, particularly as a way to prepare graduates for successful academic careers" (Garcia & Yao, 2019). Online students often report a lack of sense of community, however, as there is little interaction with peers and no face-to-face interaction with professors. A sense of community and belonging is critical for a successful doctoral journey, especially for those who are online learners. With the advancement of technology, and the increase in online educational opportunities, communities of practice are becoming a common component of online education. "Overall, doctoral socialization and scholarly development must include multiple contexts and outcomes, including professional aspirations and the online context. As a result, university administrators and faculty must take into consideration how they can better support all graduate
